Why that Name?

The name Baptist originates in the Greek language from the time of Christ. John was called the "Baptist."  This was not his last name, but the name of the work God sent him to do.  His ministry was prophesied before his birth.

Mat. 3:3  For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.  4  And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

He baptized with the purpose that people would turn from their self-righteous ways to Jesus.

Mat. 3:11  I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

True Christians have the same goal as that of John the Baptist.  A Christian is like a sign with big bold letters saying, STOP!, you are going the wrong way.  You have to turn from your own path to follow Jesus Christ.

The book of Romans makes it clear that everyone is a sinner and needs forgiveness.

6,23: "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Acts 17:30  And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:"

Religion is a system, through which people in their own way attempt to make contact with God, but every attempt will fail. The way to God is not through religion.  It is only possible through a real personal relationship with Jesus.

Jesus said,  I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6

Accepting Jesus in this manner is the only way, but you must first give up your ideas of right and wrong to be able to have His.  The Bible calls this giving up repentance.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

You must have a real relationship with Christ!
